Weaving Matter and Memory
Bottega Veneta presents Weaving Matter and Memory at Bangkok Kunsthalle, an exhibition that explores weaving through the work of four contemporary Thai artists. Encompassing approaches to the techniques that are both physical and conceptual, the featured works examine a wide range of artistic expression shaped by weaving techniques past and present.
Curated by Somsuda Piamsumrit, the exhibition surveys works by the artists Jakkai Siributr, Imhathai Suwatthanasilp, Supawich Weesapen, and Teerapon Sisung, whose practices intertwine narratives of history, the body, economic systems, and technology, while often building on traditions of artisanal craft. Inspired by the concept of Intreccio, the signature leather weave at the heart of Bottega Veneta’s high craftsmanship, the exhibition treats weaving as both a construction method and a mode of thought.
Spanning generations and mediums, Weaving Matter and Memory foregrounds artists whose practices expand foundations in craft into broader social and conceptual territory. Jakkai Siributr employs textiles, embroidery, and found fabrics to probe overlooked political and historical narratives through materials drawn from everyday life, while Imhathai Suwatthanasilp uses human hair to create intricate woven artworks, combining delicate handcraft with reflections on social instability. Supawich Weesapen constructs layered realities that merge the physical world, digital culture, and spirituality across painting and installation, and Teerapon Sisung weaves copper and metal structures to reinterpret traditional Thai art through explorations of identity, beliefs, and systems of power.
